Brad Keselowski invited to the White House

Brad and the entire Blue Duece team will be a guest at the White House on April 16, 2013. Below are the official tweets from NASCAR's PR Manager, David Higdon.

The White House has decided to honor the Sprint Cup Champion Team instead of bringing all the Chase drivers like they have in the past.

This all begs to wonder: Will the out-spoken Keselowski give President Obama some advice and/or will Keseslowski live Tweet during his visit?

Sport News writer, Bob Pockass, is reporting that Brad "will also meet with wounded warriors." As you may know, Brad Keselowski's foundation, Checkered Flag Foundation, does fundraising and events for wounded Vets.

Stereotypical NASCAR Fans

Forget the nickel, if I had a dollar for every time a non-NASCAR fan told me that NASCAR fans were nothing but rednecks, backward hicks.

Last week I read a great article written by Kelley Carter, a self-proclaimed 20-something African-American woman who likes college football and basketball and prefers hip-hop music. Kelley wrote about her first NASCAR race – the Daytona 500.

Kelley shared her “preconceived ideas” of a NASCAR fan. She assumed they would be racist and sexiest – -basically backward hicks. She shared what so many other people who haven’t been to a race believe – nothing but a bunch of racists ready to pounce on women and spit on people from different backgrounds.

Yes, there are rednecks, backward hicks at NASCAR events and yes, some can be obnoxious. But not every obnoxious fan is a redneck and not every obnoxious fan is exclusively a NASCAR fan. And so life goes.

The number of obnoxious, racist, sexiest fans I’ve personally experienced at a NASCAR race can be counted on one hand. The number of considerate, fun and generous fans I’ve personally experienced at a NASCAR race, well there aren’t enough fingers or toes to count. Yes, there are backward hicks at NASCAR races. So what? There are backward hicks at football games, baseball games and plenty other sporting events.

As Kelley discovered, there are fans from all walks of life who attend NASCAR races. And the number of people who would love to see her go to other races far out way by 99.9% to 1 to the number of people who don’t.

The reality is NASCAR fans are everyone’s neighbor, co-worker, accountant, doctor, firefighter, policemen, and teacher. NASCAR fans are as cool as any other fan who loves their favorite sport regardless of what that sport might be.

Racism isn’t exclusive to NASCAR fans. Plenty of football, baseball, basketball, soccer, etcetera fans are racist. Sexists fans are at every sporting event on the planet. Low class can also be found at stadiums across this great land.

In fact, the last time I checked there has never been a street riot after a NASCAR race. There have never been cars turned over or set on fire in the streets. There has never been a case where NASCAR fans were throwing bottles at police and trashing local businesses.

Ask any male race fan what would happen if a woman was being harassed at a race. Simply put, these supposed racist, sexist, backward hicks are respectable of other people – especially women.

And when it comes to sexism, NASCAR is the only professional sport where men and women compete together. There are women in three of NASCAR’s top series. All of those women have male fans. Fans who wish the best equipment so these women finish strong. These are men who understand the importance of women succeeding in racing so one day their daughters might do the same.

I have yet to hear any man claim women don’t belong on the track with men. Are there men who might believe that? Sure. You can find this same mentality at any other sporting event too.

Racial diversity is a big buzz word within NASCAR right now. More African-Americans, more Hispanics and more women are NASCAR’s goals. Every fan knows NASCAR’s need to attract a wider, diverse fan base and it has everything to do with sponsors – has everything to do with money. NASCAR is, after all, the only sport that survives on corporate sponsors and the only color that interest corporate sponsors is the green people used to buy their product or service.

The only race a diehard NASCAR fans cares about is the one on the track that involves their favorite driver. They don’t care what nationality, what color or sexual orientation sits next to them at the track as long as that person shares their level of respect for people and the sport. If you’re cool with them, they’re cool with you. NO different than any other sporting event.

Fans have the same requirements of every driver, regardless of nationality, sex or race, and that’s to be competitive. If a talentless driver has a ride because of diversity, that driver won’t get much fan respect because it’s not authentic. The same way Lakers fans wouldn’t appreciate a mediocre player starting alongside Kobe Bryant simply in the name of diversity.

The problem many race fans have with Danica is not that she’s a women racing with men. Some believe she doesn’t deserve the attention just because she’s a woman. Treat her like any other rookie driver. And in fact, many of these same fans want the media to focus less on Danica and give Johanna Long and Jennifer Jo Cobb (two other female racers) more attention.

Diversity is great it just shouldn’t trump talent – in any sport. And no matter what the sport, no fan will accept subpar talent – and that has nothing to do with nationality, racism or sexism.

Only those who have never been to a NASCAR race stereotype NASCAR fans as racists and sexiest. They still believe NASCAR is nothing but a good ol’ boy’s sport. I say put me in a crowd of NASCAR fans any day. Most genuine, kind and fun group of sports fans ever!

Guns, Racism and NASCAR

This week it was announced that the National Rifle Association (NRA) would be the sponsor for the Texas Motor Speedway race. Oh boy, did this make people angry. Piers Morgan from CNN just about flipped his lid. Despite the fact that the NASCAR haters have no intention of ever going to a race, that didn’t stop them from threatening to not go to a race. Yes, they were not going to a race they had no intention of going to – ever. There were people on Twitter who never once tweeted about NASCAR claim they were no longer going to be fans. Boycott the sponsors urged some of the NASCAR haters.

Then, there were those who dragged out the race card. Seems you can’t have NASCAR haters without people accusing NASCAR fans of being a bunch of racist rednecks because apparently only racist rednecks support the NRA and only rednecks are NASCAR fans. Ironically these same people who love to put labels on NASCAR fans hate to have derogatory labels attached to anyone else. These are the same people who claim they’re more enlightened and more tolerant of people different than them.

From some of the harsh comments, you’d think NASCAR fans who support the NRA are nothing but a bunch of people clinging to their guns and bibles.

Equally upset were some NASCAR fans. Some fans are haters of the NRA for many different reasons. Sadly most of the reasons were born out of hyperbole from the anti-gun media and the anti-gun government. Unfortunately too much of the reasoning doesn’t line up with their Second Amendment right.

Some fans are concerned with the political message this sponsorship could be sending. In light of all the recent shootings, having an organization that has become the poster child of gun violence, could turn off a lot of prospective NASCAR fans. I don’t believe that because until NASCAR hater attends a race, there’s nothing that can be done to change their prejudice. And their prejudice started long before the NRA sponsorship.

It was really surprising to see the NASCAR accredited media considering this a political story. How disappointing to discover they don’t want to address the story out of fear of sensitivity. They’re treating it as if Texas Motor Speedway invited the KKK to the race.

I believe all this concern and anger could be warranted… but only if you actually believed it to be true. Only if you believed the hype, the hate and only if you harbored hate for the NRA yourself could you actually believe this backlash is deserved.

We’re trying to be convinced an association with the NRA could make NASCAR appear as insensitive in the same manner we trying to be convinced to believe guns are evil and we must give up our right in order to be safe.

The tradition for winners of the race at Texas Motor Speedway has been to put on a cowboy hat and fire blanks from six-shooters. ‘Has been’ is the operative statement. This happened before the NRA sponsorship. And before this sponsorship people like Piers Morgan and NASCAR haters didn’t care that the winners were shooting guns with blanks in Victory Circle.

Now Texas Motor Speedway track president, Eddie Gossage, is willing to change the (cap gun) shooting tradition. Gossage claimed in an ESPEN interview, “I just want to make sure we don't step on anybody's toes, to make sure everybody's comfortable."

Such a reminiscent statement, I remember when Quentin Tarantino said the same thing.

Oh wait. Tarantino has never made such a statement. In fact he’s made opposite statements. He’s never apologized for violence in his films. He’s not making sure everybody’s comfortable with his movies and he sure does not care if he steps on someone’s toes.

The only Tarantino movie I saw was Pulp Fiction. That movie was so violent it made me sick. I refuse to see any of his other films for that very reason. Yes, I CHOOSE not to see his movies. I don’t boycott. I don’t try to put the theaters that show his films out of business. I don’t threaten him or try to intimidate him from making gun wielding, violent movies. I also don’t blame him for all the shootings.

Though I do believe violence in movies plays a part in increased shootings, I don’t blame Tarantino personally and I don’t call people who support his films racists or vile names.

Ironically Piers Morgan has yet to challenge Hollywood on violence in movies and nor have the NASCAR haters. Yet they have no problem challenging NASCAR and Texas Motor Speedway for the NRA sponsorship.

What will offend the NASCAR haters next, the prayer that takes place before each race? Will the encouraging of speeding upset someone? At what point does your opinion not count because it offends me? Where shall we draw the political correctness line?

I think Texas Motor Speedway should have the race winner use a double-barreled shotgun and fire two blasts. Good enough for Vice President Biden, good enough for NASCAR.

Coca-Cola Racing Nailed It With Google+ Hangout

In this not so polished, Social Media fan outreach, Coca-Cola Racing nailed it!!

Coca-Cola Racing took to Google+ Hangout and invited fans to join Greg Biffle, Elliott Sadler, Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart. Fans were able to ask questions during this live event. Sounds pretty typical, right?

Well this was anything but typical.

This media format is unpolished – and so went this first Coca-Cola Racing Family Google+ Hangout. It was laugh out loud entertaining, beginning with Kyle Petty's obvious first time with this type format. And funny not because the questions were unique, but because the drivers weren't polished. This was fly by the seat of your pants raw.

I think I'm not alone when I say, it's refreshing to see raw, unpolished interviews with NASCAR drivers. Kudos to Coca-Cola Racing! I hope they continue nailing these interviews by keeping it raw!!

It’s Not About Dale Jr., It’s About The Concussion

I've seen quite a few comments within social media stating what happened to Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (though they admit is serious) wouldn't have gotten as much media attention had it been another driver.

I have to respectfully disagree.

First of all, concussion in sports is a very hot topic right now. It’s so serious hundreds of former NFL players have filed lawsuits. While I don’t think NASCAR drivers will start filling lawsuits, the danger of concussions in sports is front and center.

Would the media have cared if it was another NASCAR driver that was forced to sit out two races during the Chase to the Championship because of a concussion – especially one that was caused from the huge wreck at Talladega? I say YES, they would care. Would they care if that driver had two concussions in the past six weeks from on-track crashes? I say, HECK YEAH, they would care.

I don’t believe this is a Dale Jr. story. Though no one can deny because of Dale Jr's popularity (NASCAR;s Most Popular Driver), this could be seen as a Dale Jr. can’t race tragedy story (sniff, sniff), but I truly believe this is beyond even Dale Jr.

What happened to Dale Jr. continues the severity narrative of concussions in sports. It fits the narrative of how many games a player should sit out after a concussion. The question of how long should an athlete compete with a concussion. NFL is clearly facing this big challenge and now NASCAR is facing it too. That’s the bigger story – even bigger than Dale Jr missing races. Mark my words.
